In a state of deterioration, the Grade II Listed chapel, dating from 1744, was included on English Heritage’s ‘Heritage at Risk’ Register. Following an offer of funding from English Heritage (resulting from our earlier condition survey) the team was commissioned to prepare designs and specification for the repairs and alterations required to bring the building back into use.

Restoration work included renewing the roof, eliminating damp, renovating stonework, repairing floors and internal timbers. New lighting, heating, ventilation systems and an environmentally friendly air source heat pump were all introduced. Access was improved with a wheelchair ramp and accessible toilet.

The chapel’s inaugural exhibition attracted record visitor numbers and the restoration project contributed to YSP being named Art Fund Museum of the Year 2014.
